The smile, followed by a creep of pink across her cheek bones, warmed Mac’s heart. He extended the pizza box he held. “I may not be your mother, but I do come bearing food.”

“I can see.”

“May I come in?”

The pink deepened. Interesting.

“Of course.” Amy stepped back to allow him to enter, giving him a wide berth. Also, interesting.

“Luckily for you, meat lovers happens to also be my favorite.” He moved past her, giving her space. For now. The kiss they’d shared remained on his mind. He wanted another taste but didn’t want to scare her off.

“As long as you skipped the anchovies.” She wrinkled her nose. “Never could stand the idea of fish on my pizza.” She moved to the kitchen table. “Not that I don’t appreciate this, but to what do I owe the honor?”

“I got your text. And I thought maybe the idea of going back to teaching tomorrow might be making you a bit nervous. Plus, you have to eat, and I figured you might be busy with preparations for your first day back.”

He panicked for a moment when her eyes grew larger. Then she hugged him. Hard. And stepped out of his reach before he could react.

“Thank you. This was very kind of you. And I never say no to pizza.”

“First nice, now kind. You’re killing me.” He took off his coat and threw it over the back of her couch. “I’m on my way in, which is why I’m dressed like this.”

She looked him up and down, from his shiny black work boots to his uniform shirt. “I thought you worked days.”

“I do. But Paul’s wife is due like yesterday. It’s their first, and she’s anxious when he’s gone. I told him I’d cover for him tonight.”

She smirked at him before opening the fridge. “See? Both kind and nice apply,” she commented to the depths of the appliance.

The yoga pants might be loose, but they gave an impression of what lay beneath. His thoughts were neither kind nor nice.

“Were you checking out my butt?”

“Guilty,” he replied without even a hint of it.

“Guess that makes us even.” She handed him a bottled water and sat at the table.

What? He sat across from her and grabbed two slices. Chewing and swallowing gave him a moment to think of a reply.

“What did you think of it? My butt?”

She took a long drink of water before answering. “Not bad.”

“Damned with faint praise.”

“You were wearing heavy winter sweats. It’s not like I could see. Much.”

“I see.” But he didn’t. Was she flirting with him? “Tell me about going back to work. How do you feel?”

“Great. Terrified.” She laughed. “Both. It’s been awhile. And I’ve only taught the younger ones.” She put down her slice of pizza, placing her hands in her lap.

“I’m sorry. I wasn’t trying to make you nervous. Or to feel badly.”

She smiled at him, and he felt it right in his gut. “Oh no, you didn’t. It’s uh, a lot. You know?” She waved a hand to indicate the apartment.
